Feedstock and positioning
Molded pulp commonly uses bagasse, bamboo or paper fibers. Conventional PP, PET and PS packaging uses polymer systems with different heat, barrier and recycling characteristics. A responsible comparison should cover the complete pack, including lids, coatings, labels and secondary packaging.
Performance
Fiber products can be engineered for hot food, oil resistance, stacking and delivery. Performance depends on structure and treatment. Plastic often provides higher transparency and moisture barrier at low weight. Test both candidates with the actual food, time and temperature.
End of life
A compostable claim should be supported by a recognized standard and matched to industrial or home composting conditions. A recyclable claim should reflect local collection and processing. Neither claim guarantees that infrastructure is available to every customer.
Total procurement cost
Unit price is only one part of the decision. Compare carton utilization, container loading, storage space, breakage, nesting, complaint risk, compliance documents, lead time and the cost of switching between suppliers. A slightly lower unit price can be offset by poor fit or inconsistent batches.
